(Phase 1 for Port Expansion)….Plans were laid out Friday.
General Services Administration hosted a round-table for stakeholders in the expansion. They included Calexico Port Director Billy Whitford, Calexico Mayor John Moreno District 1 County Supervisor John Renison, County CEO Ralph Cordova, Mark Baza, Executive Director of the Imperial County Transportation Commission and other Representatives from Calexico and the County. Phase 1 of the project is being paid for with $98 million of federal funds. The GSA said Phase 2 funding has already been included into their 2016 fiscal year budget. If that budget is approved, the transition from phase one to phase two should be a smooth one. The expansion of the port is to be constructed in the old Commercial port land in Calexico. In will include increased office space and increased traffic lanes. Pedestrian traffic will still cross at the current downtown port, but with increased lanes. Bids will be requested in August and they will be opened by the end of the year. Actual work is expected at the first of 2016 and will continue until 2018, or sooner if at all possible.
