(Calexico, part two)…The meeting Tuesday was continued Wednesday.
Tuesday the City Council surprised everyone by placing the City Manager on Administrative leave for 30 days, with a notice of intent to terminate. At the continuation Wednesday, the Council named Calexico Public Works Director Nick Fenley as the interim City Manager. In the meantime, questions have arisen as to how the City Council’s actions have affected insurance coverage for Calexico. The Joint Powers Insurance Association had threatened to cancel the cities liability and workers compensation insurance unless the Council created some stability in the city government. The JPIA rescinded the threat after the council signed a contract with Richard Warne to remain as the permanent City Manager. By placing Warne on Administrative Leave, and the threat of termination apparently did not sit well with the insurance people. Councilman John Moreno said on social media that he had been told by the JPIA that a letter was being sent to the city giving them a 30 day notice on the cancellation of the insurance. Mayor Joong Kim’s reaction is that the city is looking for another insurance carrier.
