(Mexico launches effort to save a rare porpoise)….It was announced last week
. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto traveled to San Felipe to announce the program. Mexico’s Federal Government is launching an unprecedented effort to save the rarely seen Vaquita Porpoise. The President said the measures include a dramatically expanded ban on gill net fishing in the upper Gulf of California over the next two years. Scientists believe there are fewer than 100 vaquita porpoises currently in existence. Officials say the porpoise is emblematic of Mexico, like the Panda Bear is to China. The President said for the next two years, fishermen in the area would receive about 7,000 pesos, or about $460 dollars to stay away from their gill nets and long hooks. The Mexican Navy will increase patrols in the Gulf to ensure compliance of the two-year ban.
