(Bar raised in farm-worker strike)…The strike is in San Quintin, Baja California.
Much of the product harvested in that area is exported to the United States. The strike began March 17th, with demands of higher pay and better benefits. Many of the Farm-workers have returned to work, but several hundred remain on strike. That has paid off for at least those harvesting strawberries. An U.S. grower Driscoll's of the Americas, operating under Berrymex in San Quintin, has announced they would be raising the salary for its workers by 20 to 40 percent. They did not say anything about the benefits demanded. In the meantime, several hundred of the striking farm workers are in Mexicali demanding to speak directly to state officials. Mexicali is the Capital of the Mexican State of Baja California. The striking Farm workers blocked entry at the Calexico Downtown Port of Entry Tuesday. The action lasted a few hours before the workers left to continue protesting at the state building in the Centro Civico of Mexiicali.
