(Baja officials claim extortion)….The officials include Francisco Vega de Lamadrid, the Governor of Baja California.
Others include five Mayors of major cities in Baja. The Governor and the Mayor’s took out a full-page ad in other newspapers accusing the Frontera in Tijuana and its sister publications in Mexicali and Ensenada of extortion. The ad says the politicians will not permit this or any other media organization to apply pressure, through editorial content, with the aim of solving their economic goals, in detriment of the public budget. The ad announced the cancellation of commercial relations with the Sonora based owners of the publications. The publications are owned by the Healy family. The ad denounced what they called a policy of blackmail. Just as unusual as the advertisement is the fact it was signed by the Governor and two Mayors, members of the PAN political party and three other Mayors, Members of the PRI political party. That, in itself, is unprecedented.
