Metal Theft bill moves out of key committee

Garcia bill makes it through a key committee)… Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia’s bill would assist public safety agencies.

The bill is designed to combat the metal theft crisis. The Assembly Committee on Public Safety passed the bill. Garcia says his bill would create the Metal Theft Task Force within the California Department of Justice. He said the legislation would also direct the DOJ to award grants based on a number of criteria where the most pressing needs are for additional funding.. Garcia said they must tackle the metal theft issue. He said the thefts have severely hit California industry, agriculture, residential construction, and especially his district that includes the Coachella Valley and all of Imperial County. The Assemblyman say metal theft costs the US Economy over $1 billion per year according to the Department of Energy. AB 1019 now goes to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for further review,
