(Protecting inmates and correctional officers)….It is taking some juggling.

The idea is to protect inmates and officers from COVID 19. Imperial County Sheriff Ray Loera says they are trying to keep the jail population low. He says misdemeanor and non violent crimes will likely get a citation and will not be taken to jail. Current inmates convicted of misdemeanors will be released, with limitations approved by the courts. The Sheriff said each case will be reviewed. Aggressive criminal, violent offenders, sex crimes and other felonies will still be taken to jail. A smaller jail population is easier to control the possible spread of COVID 19 Corona Virus. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is also taking measures to reduce prison populations.
