(A ceremonial groundbreaking)…It was ceremonial because construction began in November.
It was held late Wednesday morning at the Mount Signal Solar Farm. The 266 megawatt Solar Farm was being developed by 8minutEnergy. It will transition to AES Solar, who obtained the $636 million financing. The first phase is being built on 1,900 acres of land near Calexico. The energy produced from the Solar Farm will be transported to San Diego through the Sunrise Power Link. When completed , the Solar Farm will have about 3.1 million photovoltaic on 4,500 acres of converted farm land. Completion of the project is anticipated for the first half of 2014. The project will employee as many as 950 during the construction phase. 200 megawatts will be sold to San Diego Gas and Electric once the project is operational.
