Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District (PMHD) has filed a writ of mandate asking for relief from AB 918.

According to the writ, filed in Imperial County Superior Court, says that AB 918 resulted in a set of special laws applicable only to Imperial Valley where more general laws governing creation, dissolution. and reorganization of healthcare districts already exists. According to PMHD, members of the district staff, board members and citizens met with Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, author of AB 918, and discussed various concerns, including several potential scenarios that could undermine the goal of the legislation. Among concerns were the possibility that El Centro and the Imperial Valley Healtcare District (IVHD) are unable to agree on the terms of acquisition of El Centro Regional Medical Center or where Imperial County voters do not agree to pay an additional tax to support the newly created county-wide district.

According to PMHD, Filing the writ of mandate seeks to rectify this situation by requesting the court to declare the application of AB 918 unlawful and void.
