The incident occurred Saturday, January 27, 2024, at a New York City shelter.

The four men are charged with felonies for assaulting two New York City Police Officers. They were among at least seven people arrested in the incident. The men were released from custody on their own recognizance when the Manhattan District Attorney's Office did not request bail. A faith-based charity then bought the men bus tickets for Calexico.

Calexico Interim Police Chief Armando Orozco issued a press release stating that the Calexico Police Department is fully prepared to handle any related matters, and assuring residents that their safety is their top priority. Orozco said that his department is actively cooperating with relevant authorities to gather more information about the incident and determine an appropriate course of action.
