Calexico Police arrested an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old Juvenile allegedly involved in an El Centro shooting.

On Saturday Calexico officers responded to a local business after a report of a shoplifter possibly armed with rifle. Employees at the business had detained the man but released him after noticing a gun in his waistband. The suspect fled the store with another individual. Officers looked at surveillance video from the business and confirmed the man was armed. A short time later there was a report of a man with a gun near a playground. Officers located the suspects from the shoplifting incident and, after a short standoff, the two surrendered. Officers were able to locate an AR-15 style rifle concealed by one of the individuals. Arresting officers also noticed bloodstains on their clothing. The pair were then linked to an earlier shooting in El Cento in which an 18-year-old man was shot in the leg. One of the suspects was identified as Mauricio Julian Mondragon, 18, of El Centro. The other individual was identified as a 17-year-old Brawley resident. Both were charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
