A multi-alarm fire shut down Interstate 8 near Winterhaven Drive Thursday afternoon.

The fire, involving construction equipment along the freeway, was reported at 12:15 p.m. and involved several vehicles including a truck reported to contain some hazardous materials. Fire fighters from Yuma and the Imperial County battled the blaze for several hours and, at one time, The California Highway Patrol, Arizona Department of Public Safety and Imperial County Sheriff's Office closed both the east and westbound lanes of the freeway. The westbound lanes reopened after about 90 minutes. The eastbound lanes remained closed until about 2:30 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
