(Mosquito infestation)…It was reported in Salton City.
County Public Health investigated the report. They did not find a mosquito infestation. What they did find was Boatman Bugs. Boatman Bugs are not a vector, disease transmitting insect, or an agricultural pest. The Health Department says the increase in the Boatman Bug population in the area is attributed to a decrease in the fish populations in the Salton Sea. The Boatman population was controlled by the fish eating the adults and the larvae. For the past two years the fish population has decreased and the bug population increased. There is no known chemical available to eradicate the bug. It is suggested night time light sources, which attract the insects, be reduced and breeding sources be eliminated. That may be difficult, since the bug breeds in the Salton Sea and all other water bodies of water.
