(County Board discusses Mud Pot situation)…The issue is North of Niland.

A Mud Pot discovered in 1953 has slowly been moving westward. It is now moving faster and is threatening the Railroad Tracks as well as Highway 111. Tuesday the Board of Supervisors agreed to extend the emergency declaration issued by the Board months ago. They also received a status report. Cal Trans is working to realign Highway 111. There is work to install of sheet pile wall with subsurface drainage under Highway 111 and on both sides of the sheet pile wall. A detour is also planned to possibly re-route traffic to Highway 86, if needed. Union Pacific Railroad is also working to move the tracks from the current location.
