(SB 1139 will not be voted on this year)….It may be dead altogether.
The bill would have required utilities to purchase 500 megawatts of power from new geothermal plants by 2024. Most of those new plants would have been constructed along the Salton Sea. Proceeds from the geothermal plants would have gone towards restoration of the Salton Sea. The Imperial Irrigation District saw the bill as an integral part of their Salton Sea restoration plan. The bill was authored by Assemblyman Manuel Perez and State Senator Ben Hueso. The senator decided to pull the bill before it could go before the state senate for a floor vote. The state legislature is not expected to vote on any more bills for the rest of this year. Hueso has said he may bring SB 1139 back next session, but in a slightly different form. Hueso has not said why he pulled the bill without allowing it to be voted on.
