Agriculture still the leading industry in the County

(Ag Gross Production values set a record for 2013)….The 2013 Imperial County Agricultural Crop and Livestock Report was released Tuesday morning.

Ag Commissioner Connie Valenzuela told the Board of Supervisors the Gross Production for 2013 was valued at $2,158,517,000. That is a new record for the Imperial County. Valenzuela said it was a 10.93 percent increased over the 2012 gross value of $1.9 billion. The Ag Commissioner attributed the increase a general increase in yields and market prices. Plus the addition of some new commodities such as new high value vegetables and much improved demand for winter produce in the Northwest and Midwest. The increase in 2013 gross production was despite an overall decrease of 35,444 total harvested acres. Valenzuela said the only general category to show a decline in harvested acreage and gross value was Field Crops, with the biggest decline in wheat. Wheat dropped from it’s ranking as the #3 commodity in 2012 to #12 in 2013. The number 1 commodity in the County was still Livestock.
