(Funding issue may not be decided until the end of the year)….The issue is funding for the expansion of the Downtown Calexico Port of Entry.
Last week a Senate Appropriations sub-committee removed the $98 million for the Calexico port from a proposed funding bill. The action was part of the sub-committees draft report to the full Senate Appropriations committee. At the time Imperial Valley residents were asked to email, text, or call Committee members to explain the importance of expanding the Downtown Calexico Port, emphasizing the economic and national security benefits. It turns out the issue will probably not go to the Full Appropriations committee until at least early September. The Senate takes its summer break beginning Friday, August 1st. Officials say they do not expect any movement on the bill this week. They say it may be until after the November elections before the funding bill goes to the Senate floor for a vote.
