(MANA de Imperial Valley awards scholarships)….30 local High School graduates and one IVC student received a $500 award.
The IVC student was chosen for the Elsa Downs Memorial Nursing Scholarship. The Imperial Valley Chapter of MANA is a National Latina Organization. The scholarships were presented during a June 19th ceremony in Condit Auditorium on Broadway in El Centro. The 2014 MANA Scholarships were made available to Latina High School Graduates through the community support at Las Primeras Awards Gala and Scholarship Fundraiser this past year. This allowed MANA to raise the funds for the scholarships presented to young Latina’s pursuing higher education. President of the local MANA Chapter, Rebecca Terrazas Baxter, said the group of recipients this year was an excellent group of young ladies who excelled academically and were outstanding leaders in their community. MANA was founded in 1974 as the Mexican American Women’s National Association. The original intent was to provide a voice for Mexican American women at the National, State and local levels. The organization has now expended into a diverse group of Latinas who continue to develop their abilities in political, social and professional fields MANA empowers Latinas through leadership development, community service and advocacy.
