State recount starts with Imperial County

(Imperial County to be part of recount)…Registrar of voters Debra Porter confirmed the news.

Porter was giving a report to the Board of Supervisors. She said former Assembly Speaker John Perez has asked for the recount in the State Controllers race. Perez was a candidate for State Controller in the June 3rd election. When the counting was complete, Perez had finished third in the race, just over 400 votes behind the 2nd place candidate. The top two finishers face off in November. Perez has demanded a recall in 15 counties in the state. Porter said it would be a rolling recall, which means one county hand counts their ballots and the next county does not start their count until the first county is finished. The local Registrar says Imperial and Kern Counties have been named as the top counties in the recall. Porter said that means they will begin their hand-counts first. She said the Imperial County count should be done in a week and a half. There may be a problem, however. Betty Yee, another candidate, has said it is illegal for two counties to count their ballots simultaneously, and she will demand a recount of her own if Perez garners more votes through his recount.
