(First group arrives in El Centro)….The group traveled from Texas to be processed in El Centro.
The mostly Central American Families and children were among tens of thousands apprehended by Border Patrol agents in Texas after crossing the border illegally. The numbers overwhelmed the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector, and the agency decided to send several groups of people to other Border Patrol Sectors to be processed. The reception of the first group of 140 Wednesday was peaceful and professional. It is expected a similar sized group will arrive in El Centro every 3 days until the pressure is off in Texas. In the meantime, a County official addressed the concern of how the county will handle the illegal migrants who are released after processing. He said nobody would be released unless they have a place to go and the means to get there. Congressman Juan Vargas said he met and prayed with some of the arrivals, assuring them they would be treated legally and fairly.
