(48 year old woman and her 21 year old son in custody)…They were arrested by Border Patrol agents.
Agents say the son, Francisco Javier Beltran Urquiza was driving a 2007 Jeep Commander this week as it entered the Highway 86 checkpoint, between Westmorland and Salton City. His mother, Jesus Lorena Beltran Urquiza, was a passenger in the Jeep, A Border Patrol k-9 alerted to the vehicle, and it was directed to the secondary inspection area. While searching the Jeep, agents discovered a hidden compartment in the frame. Inside the compartment were 18 wrapped packages of cocaine. The narcotic weighed 20.96 pounds, with an estimated street value of $209,700. The mother was questioned and admitted the two were being paid to transport the cocaine to Indio. The mother and son are Mexican nationals residing in Mexicali. They were placed under arrest and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the vehicle and the cocaine. The DEA will conduct an investigation into the smuggling attempt.
