(Arrest at the Checkpoint)….It happened recently at the Highway 111 Checkpoint

. A Subaru Legacy drove up to the checkpoint. During the primary inspection, the Border Patrol agent noticed four people in the rear seat of the vehicle. The agent asked their immigration status. When they did not answer. The agent asked the driver what the immigration status of the passengers. The driver said no one, and sped away from the checkpoint. There was a short pursuit, before the driver surrendered. He was placed under arrest. It was determined the passengers were Mexican citizens, in the US illegally. A records check on the driver found he had been arrested in 2012 for attempted murder. He was convicted of the charge and sentenced to 5 years in prison. He was also arrested in 2018 for carrying a concealed weapon. That was a parole violation and a warrant had been issued for his arrest. The 35-year-old US citizen was turned over to Imperial County Sheriff’s office to await extradition to the Department of Corrections in Diamond Bar.
