(Union holds a rally)….They want public support.
The Union represents the contract employees at the ICE Detention Facility in El Centro. The same employees who could lose their jobs if the facility is close down. Union leaders say that may not happen. The Rally Tuesday went from across the roadway from the Detention Facility in El Centro to the County Board of Supervisors Meeting. At the meeting, a Union rep told the Supervisors they had traveled to Washington D.C. to meet face to face with Immigration and Customs Protection Officials. Surprisingly, they say the meeting request was granted. He said officials told him and others that changes are planned for the El Centro Facility, but it all depends on how much support there is in the community to keep the facility open. One plan is to turn the El Centro facility into a receiving facility for women and children. They said a decision would be made in the next couple weeks. The union rep said that is why they are holding rallies to garner public support. The Supervisors told them they would continue to support the employees, and would send another letter indicating that decision to ICE officials. They also set up a meeting with the Employee Representatives to organize efforts to garner public support.
