(Highway 86 shut over the weekend)…Not once, but twice. The first came Saturday.
The California Highway Patrol shut down the Highway north of Westmorland. This was to allow the CHP to investigate a multi-vehicle, chain reaction collision. Northbound 86 was shut down at the Border Patrol Checkpoint. Southbound traffic was backed up to North Marina. Sunday the Highway was closed near Salton City due to strong gusty winds and blowing dust, reducing visibility to almost zero. That blowing dust created an air quality issue in Brawley and Niland of Unhealthy for sensitive groups. Levels of PM 10 did not lower to moderate levels until Monday morning.
