(It is now official)…A US Navy ship will be named after the city of Yuma.
The Secretary of the Navy traveled to Yuma to make the announcement. Ray Mabus said Yuma was under consideration almost a year ago. He was at Gateway Park recently to announce the decision was official. One of five Joint High Speed Vessels will be named USS Yuma. The city is the home of a Marine Air Station, and Mabus said Yuma for years had been a very good friend to the military. The $184.4 million vessel is still under construction. It is expected to be commissioned in 2015. The ship is expected to conduct humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and support Special Forces operations overseas. Coincidentally, the announcement comes during Yuma’s Centennial month.
