A push for geothermal energy

(Hueso Bill gets local backing)…SB 1139 was authored by State Senator Ben Hueso and co-authored by Assemblyman Manuel Perez.

The bill would require electric utilities to procure 500 megawatts of electricity from baseload geothermal power plants by December 31, 2024. The procurement requirement for each utility would be based on a statewide proportionate share and at least one-half of that share should be procured by December 31, 2019. The Imperial Irrigation District Directors said the bill would go a long way in promoting and supporting the Salton Sea initiative developed by the IID and joined by the County. The initiative calls for development of geothermal plants on IID owned land in the receding shoreline of the Salton Sea, with proceeds going towards the restoration of the Sea. The Supervisors also voted to support the bill Tuesday, and said they would be participating in committee meetings, along with the IID. Gary Wyatt, County intergovernmental liaison, told the Supervisors other utilities, such as Southern California Edison, are opposing the bill, so it will be a fight to get the bill passed. The IID Directors also supported a Senate Resolution declaring May as Geothermal Month and May 5th as Geothermal Day.
