(Air Alert for Brawley Wednesday afternoon)….It was no surprise.
Tuesday Air Pollution Control District Officer Brad Poiriez told the County Board of Supervisors that the gusty winds would increase air pollution in the areas of Brawley, Niland and Westmorland, as well as other areas. He said in other areas, such as Calexico, the strong winds would blow the air pollution away from the city. At 3:00 pm Wednesday the 24 hour average of PM 10 had reached 104 on the Air Quality Index in Brawley for a condition of Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. PM 10 is created mostly by dust in the air. Poiriez said the dust is blown in from the desert by the strong gusty winds. By Thursday morning the levels of the Particulate Matter had lowered.
