(Today is Cesar Chavez Day.)….It was so proclaimed by the Governor.
The Day celebrates the day the late labor leader was born. Chavez would have been 87 years old this year. He was born in Yuma, Arizona. The family farm was lost in the Great Depression, and they became migrant field workers. Chavez later worked as a community organizer. In 1962, along with Dolores Huerta, Chavez formed what would become the United Farm Workers Union. The Union was instrumental in the passage of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act. Some schools in Imperial County are not holding closes today. A movie on Chavez was released Friday. Saturday there were tributes to Cesar Chavez hosted by the Neighborhood House in Calexico and the Hidalgo Society in Brawley.
