(Senator may change position)….U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein backed the Sunrise Powerlink Project last week. At a committee hearing in Washington D.C., Feinstein pressured the head of the Forest Service, Tom Tidwell. The Forest Service must sign off on the Project because the proposed transmission line would cross the Cleveland National Forest in east San Diego County. The line is designed to carry renewable energy from Imperial County into San Diego. The billion dollar project would be developed by San Diego Gas and Electric. SDG&E says they are ready to break ground as soon as the Forestry Services gives the go ahead. During the Appropriations Committee hearings, Feinstein accused Tidwell of holding up the vital project. She said she knew of no opposition. Her staff corrected her, and the Senator said the opposition was fully considered and dismissed. This week Feinstein was told about San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. Jacob has been leading the opposition to the project. Feinstein then said she would be willing to meet with Jacob, consider her concerns. She said if the concerns were substantial she would take another look at her support. SDG&E has promised its investors that the project would not be held up by federal bureaucrats. The Imperial County Board of Supervisors have approved a letter to the Forestry Service asking that they stop dragging their feet in approving the project. |
