(Three are killed in two-vehicle collision)…The incident involved an agent of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Department. Investigators have not released the name of the agent involved. The California Highway Patrol says the collision occurred at just after 7:00 Tuesday evening. The CHP says the on-duty agent was driving a government vehicle north on Bowker Road, approaching the intersection with Heber Road. The Highway Patrol say 41 year old Sandra Garcia of Imperial was driving a Dodge mini-van east on Heber. As both vehicles approached the intersection, the CHP says the ICE agent failed to stop at the posted sign. The Government vehicle slammed into the side of the mini-van. The collision caused both vehicles to travel into a drainage ditch. The Highway Patrol says two children, a one year old and an 11-year-old, in the mini-van were properly restrained. They were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. They were then transported to Children’s Hospital in San Diego. At last report, the children were in stable condition and doing fine. The ICE agent also suffered moderate injuries and was transported to ECRMC. Garcia and two adult passengers in the mini-van, 47 year old Patricia Martinez Reyes from Mexicali and 49 year old Maria Consuelo Nieto from El Centro, all suffered fatal injuries. The three were pronounced dead at the scene and had to be extricated from the vehicle. The CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is assisting with the investigation of the collision, which is continuing. |
