Planning Commission recommends against petition PDF Print E-mail

(Name change will be up to City Council)…The El Centro Planning Commission is against it.

The Commission heard both sides of the issue Tuesday night. A group led by Don Walker submitted a petition to change the name of Eighth Street to Martin Luther King Jr Drive. There were 125 Street addresses on the petition. Only two, however, spoke in favor of the change. Several from the City and business community spoke against it. City officials said the change would cost the El Centro approximately $50,000 to change the name. The businessman said it would cost them much more. Walker contends cost should not be an issue. In denying the petition, the planning commission passes the issue on to the City Council. They will take up the petition request at a future meeting.
