(Legal Challenge filed to postpone water transfers)….Imperial County and the County Air Pollution Control District filed the legal challenge on October 9.

Attorneys for the County say they are challenging the U.S. Department of Interior and the Bureau of Reclamation. The purpose is to prevent water transfers until guarantees are in place to meet air quality laws. The County has contested the Quantification Settlement Agreement in the past, saying water transfers allowed for under the agreement would reduce water levels at the Salton Sea. The exposed playa would impact air quality for the rest of the County. The legal challenge filed this month wants all water transfers stopped, not just the San Diego transfer. Parties of interest in the legal challenge include the Imperial Irrigation District, San Diego County Water Authority, Coachella valley Water District and the Metropolitan Water District.
