(County Poverty Level Rate increases)…The U.S. Census Bureau has released the results of their 2008 American Community Survey.

It indicates 22.9% of Imperial County residents are under the poverty level. That is an increase from the 21.6% recorded in the 2007 Survey. The level is determined by a comparison of a household income for the past 12 months with what the Census Bureau deems an appropriate poverty threshold. Imperial County has the highest poverty level in the state. California’s poverty level is at 13.3%. Imperial Counties median income of $37,936 is also the lowest in the state.
