(New program designed to keep people out of canal).... The Imperial Irrigation District and the San Diego County Water Authority are working with the Mexican Consulate on the campaign. The new safety program will officially be unveiled at a news conference in Calexico next week. The Consulate will introduce the safety campaign to try and keep people out of the All American Canal. Kevin Kelley of the IID told the Board Tuesday the campaign would focus on residents of Mexico. District Graphic artist Tony DeZego has designed a poster that will be put up in strategic areas of Mexicali. Kelley said Univision has come forward to develop Spanish Language public service announcements. He said they have enlisted a Mexican singer to provide testimonials on the dangers of entering the canal. Kelley said the campaign will focus on the entire length of the canal, and not just the recently concrete lined portion. Kelley said the District's contribution to the campaign will be no more than $5,000. The District Board will be asked to endorse the campaign at their August 18 meeting. Board President James Hanks has been asked to speak at the press conference next Wednesday at 2nd and Heber in Calexico.
