Calexico Mayor to take over City Manager duties

(Calexico names interim City Manager)…The City Council went into a special closed session Thursday evening. The purpose was to name an interim City Manager, following the resignation Wednesday of Ralph Velez. When they came out of closed session, the Council announced the interim City Manager would be the Mayor, Louis Fuentes. They said it was a cost savings move. Fuentes will perform the extra duties at no additional salary. The Council expects to hire a permanent City Manager by the end of July. The City is facing a $4 million budget deficit, and they say the City cannot afford any extra expenditures. Velez is expected to remain on the job until next Wednesday, June 24. The severance package for Velez includes four months salary.
