SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres announced today that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with left-handed pitcher David Wells. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.
Wells, 43, went a combined 3-5 with a 4.42 ERA (37 ER/75.1 IP) in 13 starts between Boston and San Diego in 2006. He compiled 38 strikeouts compared to 12 walks in 75.1 innings overall. Acquired by the Padres from the Red Sox on Aug. 31, Wells went 1-2 with a 3.49 ERA (11 ER/28.1 IP) in five starts for San Diego. He earned the win in the Padres playoff-clinching game on Sept. 30 at Arizona, tossing 6.0 shutout innings against the Diamondbacks. A native of San Diego and a 1982 graduate of Point Loma High School, Wells also pitched for the Padres during the 2004 season. He made 31 starts for San Diego, finishing 12-8 with a 3.73 ERA (81 ER/195.2 IP). Wells fanned 101 batters compared to 20 walks in his lone full-season in the National League. He led the National League that season with an average of just 0.92 walks allowed per 9.0 innings, not issuing a free pass in 18 of his 31 starts and walking two or fewer batters in 30 of 31 starts. Over parts of 20 Major League seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays (1987-92, 1999-2000), Detroit Tigers (1993-95), Cincinnati Reds (1995), Baltimore Orioles (1996), New York Yankees (1997-98, 2002-03), Chicago White Sox (2001), Padres (2004, 2006) and Red Sox (2005-06), Wells has a career record of 230-148 with 13 saves and a 4.07 ERA (1483 ER/3281.2 IP) in 631 career games (460 starts). The three-time All-Star ranks sixth among active pitchers in wins, third among left-handers. Wells has pitched in the postseason 11 times in his career for six different clubs (Toronto, Cincinnati, Baltimore, New York, Boston and San Diego). He has a career postseason record of 10-5 with a 3.17 ERA (44 ER/125.0 IP) in 27 playoff and World Series outings (17 starts) and earned 1998 ALCS Most Valuable Player honors while with the Yankees.
