San Diego, California - The San Diego Padres today reinstated outfielder Brian Giles from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-handed pitcher Mike Thompson to Triple-A Portland. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Giles, 36, has been on the disabled list since May 26 (retroactive to May 20) due to a right knee contusion. He completed a three-game rehab assignment last night with the Padres Single-A Lake Elsinore affiliate. Over the three games, Giles batted .400 (4-for-10) with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored and four walks.

In 42 games for the Padres this season, Giles has hit .276 (47-for-170) with nine doubles, one home run, 12 RBI, 23 runs scored and 16 walks. He has reached base safely in 37 of his 42 games and recorded 15 multi-hit contests.

Acquired by San Diego from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Aug. 26, 2003, Giles has batted .282 (574-for-2032) with 121 doubles, 18 triples, 57 homers, 290 RBI, 322 runs scored and 348 walks in 546 games with the Padres. In 1,560 career games over parts of 13 seasons with Cleveland (1995-98), Pittsburgh (1999-2003) and San Diego (2003-07), he has a career average of .294 (1599-for-5430) with 343 doubles, 48 triples, 261 home runs, 953 RBI, 973 runs scored and 1,022 walks.

Thompson, 26, was recalled from Portland prior to yesterday's game at San Francisco. After making the Padres 25-man roster out of Spring Training, he was optioned to Portland on April 19. Thompson is 2-6 with a 6.86 ERA (45 ER/59.0 IP) in 12 games (11 starts) for the Beavers. He is 0-1 with a 7.84 ERA (9 ER/10.1 IP) in five games for the Padres this year.

Originally selected by San Diego in the fifth round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Thompson has a career Major League record of 4-6 with a 5.28 ERA (60 ER/102.1 IP), 40 strikeouts and 33 walks in 24 games (16 starts).
