SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres on Thursday announced plans for a statue to be placed at PETCO Park honoring "Mr. Padre" and National Baseball Hall of Fame electee Tony Gwynn. Padres chief executive officer Sandy Alderson made the announcement.

The statue will be unveiled on Saturday, July 21, prior to the Padres vs. Philadelphia Phillies game at 7:05 p.m. PT. The festivities are part of "Tribute to Tony Weekend," set for July 20-22 -- the final home weekend before Gwynn is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 29 in Cooperstown, N.Y .

"Tony Gwynn is a San Diego icon, not just because of his 20 seasons in a Padres uniform, but also because of his dedication to his craft, this franchise and the community," said Alderson. "It's fitting that the first statue at PETCO Park bear his likeness. He represents everything that is positive about the San Diego Padres and Major League Baseball."

A fan participation element involving the Padres Foundation for Children, as well as information about the artist designing the statue will be released at later date.

Gwynn debuted for the Padres in San Diego on June 19, 1982, against the Phillies. He went on to enjoy a 20-year Major league career with the Padres that included a National League record-tying eight batting titles and 15 All-Star Game selections.

He was the first unanimous selection to the Padres Hall of Fame in 2002 following his retirement at the conclusion of the 2001 season. Gwynn's No. 19 was retired in 2004 and is displayed atop the batter's eye in center field. He is the head baseball coach at San Diego State University.

Tribute to Tony Weekend: The weekend of July 20-22, the Padres and their fans will pay tribute to Tony Gwynn as he prepares to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Gameday promotions include Tony Gwynn Retro Visors (July 20), a pregame ceremony honoring Gwynn, including the statue unveiling, and Tony Gwynn Commemorative Mini-bats for Kids (July 22).

Old school: Two of three Retro Night games this season will include the Padres wearing throwback uniforms as a symbolic nod to Gwynn:

1980s -- The Friars will don their 1982 duds on June 22 (7:05 p.m. vs. Boston) in commemoration of Gwynn's Major League debut on June 19, 1982.

1990s -- September 14 is 1990s Retro Night (7:05 vs. San Francisco) and San Diego will wear its 1997 navy-blue pinstripe uniforms in recognition of Gwynn's seventh and final National League batting title.

(1970s -- San Diego will wear its 1973 uniforms on May 11 (7:05 p.m. vs. St. Louis.)

Tickets for these games as well as the entire 2007 home season go on sale beginning at 9:00 a.m. PT on Saturday, March 3.
