San Diego, California - The San Diego Padres announced today that right-handed pitcher Matt Buschmann and second baseman Matt Antonelli have been named the club's Minor League pitcher and player of the month for July. Vice President/Scouting & Player Development Grady Fuson made the announcements.
Buschmann, who was also named the organization's Minor League pitcher of the month in June, went 4-1 with a 2.65 ERA (11 ER/37.1 IP) in six July starts for Single-A Lake Elsinore. The 23-year-old right-hander compiled 36 strikeouts compared to seven walks while holding opponents to a .261 average (36-for-138). His four wins during the month finished tied for third in the California League and his 2.65 ERA was sixth. In 24 starts overall for the Storm this season, Buschmann is 11-6 with a 2.99 ERA (47 ER/141.1 IP). He ranks among California League leaders in ERA (4th), wins (T-2nd) and strikeouts (T-2nd, 110). Buschmann was selected by the Padres in the 15th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Vanderbilt University and is in his second season in the San Diego system. Antonelli, 22, batted .408 (40-for-98) with five doubles, a triple, six home runs, 22 RBIs, 32 runs scored, 20 walks and three stolen bases in 26 combined games with Single-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio in July. The second baseman hit .389 (14-for-36) in nine games with the Storm during the month prior to his promotion to San Antonio on July 12. In 17 July contests with the Missions, Antonelli hit a Texas League-best .419 (26-for-62) with a .507 on-base percentage. Selected by San Diego in the first round (17th overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Antonelli is batting .325 (142-for-437) with 20 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs, 68 RBIs, 110 runs scored, 68 walks and 24 stolen bases over 106 games with Lake Elsinore and San Antonio this season. In his 24 games with San Antonio, he is hitting .367 (33-for-90) with six doubles, seven homers, 14 RBI and 21 runs scored. |
