SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres announced today that left-handed pitcher Nathan Culp and infielder Chase Headley have been named the club's minor league pitcher and player of the month for April. Vice President/Scouting & Player Development Grady Fuson made the announcements.
Culp, 22, finished April with a 2-1 record and a 1.46 ERA (4 ER/24.2 IP) in four starts for Single-A Fort Wayne. He led the Wizards with 22 strikeouts while issuing only three walks. Additionally, his 1.46 ERA ranked eighth in the Midwest League. Culp was selected by the Padres in the fourth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Missouri-Columbia and is in his second season in the San Diego system. The 23-year-old Headley batted .360 (31-for-86) with eight doubles, a triple, five home runs, 17 RBI and 17 runs scored in 24 games for the Double-A San Antonio Missions during the month of April. He led the Texas League in RBI, doubles (T1st) and on-base percentage (.444) while finishing second in batting average, hits, slugging percentage (.651), extra-base hits (14) and runs scored. Headley's five home runs in April also finished tied for fourth in the league. Selected by the Padres in the second round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Tennessee, Headley is in his third season in the Padres organization. |
