San Diego, California -- The San Diego Padres today placed outfielder Brian Giles on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 20) due to a right knee contusion and subsequently recalled infielder/outfielder Paul McAnulty from Triple-A Portland. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Giles, 36, has hit .276 (47-for-170) with nine doubles, one home run, 12 RBI, 23 runs scored and 16 walks in 42 games for the Padres this season. He has reached base safely in 37 of his 42 games and recorded a team-high-tying 15 multi-hit games.

Acquired by San Diego from the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 26, 2003, Giles has batted .282 (574-for-2032) with 121 doubles, 18 triples, 57 homers, 290 RBI, 322 runs scored and 348 walks in 546 games with the Padres. In 1,560 career games over parts of 13 seasons with Cleveland (1995-98), Pittsburgh (1999-2003) and San Diego (2003-07), he has a career average of .294 (1599-for-5430) with 343 doubles, 48 triples, 261 home runs, 953 RBI, 973 runs scored and 1,022 walks.

The 26-year-old McAnulty is batting .277 (33-for-119) with seven doubles, a triple, two homers, 15 RBI, eight runs scored and 16 walks in 32 games with the Beavers this season. He made San Diego's Major League Opening Day Roster for the first time in his career and hit .125 (1-for-8) with a double and a run scored in eight games for the Padres before he was optioned to Portland on April 18.

Originally selected by San Diego in the 12th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, McAnulty has a career .200 average (9-for-45) with two doubles, a home run, three RBI and eight runs scored in 46 Major League games with the Padres (2005-07).
