SAN DIEGO -- Beginning Monday, July 16, the San Diego Padres will host a seven-game homestand, playing three games against the New York Mets, followed by four games versus the Philadelphia Phillies.
Monday's 7:05 p.m. Mets-Padres game will include a visit by the International Myeloma Foundation's Myeloma Mobile. The information center is traveling across the country creating awareness for blood cancers such as myeloma and the fact the diseases are being diagnosed in younger people in increasing numbers. Myeloma Mobile, the brainchild of Michael Tuophy, focuses on treatment options available. Tuophy's son Mikey will deliver a Ceremonial First Pitch. Tuesday's New York-San Diego matchup, also a 7:05 p.m. start, includes a pre-game ceremony recognizing the San Diego Foundation for reaching the $50-million mark in its Endow San Diego campaign. Youngsters from the San Diego Make-A-Wish Foundation will each enjoy a $100 shopping spree prior to Wednesday's game, followed by a meet and greet with Padres players during batting practice. Thursday's 7:05 p.m. game brings the Phillies to PETCO Park and marks the anniversary of 2007 National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Tony Gwynn's Major League debut. Gwynn debuted on July 19, 1982 against Philadelphia, going 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Prior to Thursday's game, zookeepers from the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park will be honored. Twenty keepers and some of the animals they care for will be recognized in an on-field ceremony. Friday's game commences "Tribute to Tony" Weekend, presented by Cox Communications/4SD. That night's 7:05 Padres-Phillies game includes Tony Gwynn Retro Visors for all fans in attendance. Additionally, fans will be able to get their first look at a new Wheaties cereal box with Gwynn on the front. The box will be shown to media Thursday and publicly revealed during Friday's pregame. Saturday's 7:05 p.m. San Diego-Philadelphia tilt is highlighted by the dedication of a Gwynn statue in the Park at the Park. The nine-and-a-half-foot tall bronze likeness of Mr. Padre will be unveiled during a special pre-game ceremony. It will be the first statue at PETCO Park. All fans at the game will take home a Tony Gwynn Commemorative Poster, compliments of Think Blue, Modern Postcard and Cox Communications/ 4SD.
