(Baseball is in the air)…Spring training for major league Baseball is beginning this week, with the new season getting underway at the end of the month. For most baseball fans, possibly the greatest moment in the game was the breaking of the color barrier.

This was done by Jackie Robinson with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Robinson was brought to the big leagues by Dodger General Manager Branch Ricky, and not only broke the color barrier, he shattered it. Robinson was not only the first African American to play major league Baseball, he was the National Leagues Rookie of the Year in 1947. Local Sports historian Richard Mallatt says that was a significant year for local Baseball fans, as well. The Most Valuable Player of the Year in 1947 was Bob Elliot who played for the Boston Braves. Elliot had graduated from Central Union High School in 1937. Also in 1947, Mallatt says the local star was Nate Moreland. Moreland was a pitcher for the Imperials of the Class ‘C’ Sunset League. Moreland just happened to be African/American and played a few seasons with the professional El Centro based team, before being traded to the Mexicali team. Mallatt says the batboy for the Imperials in 1947 was Doug Harvey. Harvey went on to become one of the greatest and most influential Umpires in Major League Baseball, and just missed being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in February. He will be up for another vote in 4 years. Mallatt recommends a very interesting book for local Baseball fans. It is called “Best Seat in Baseball, But You Have to Stand.”
