Arrowhead Stadium (79,451) – Kansas City, Missouri
Sunday, December 2, 2007 - 10:00 a.m. PST
San Diego, California - The first-place San Diego Chargers take a one-game lead into Sunday’s key AFC West clash as they make their annual visit to Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Chiefs. The Bolts hold a one-game lead over Denver and a two-game lead over Kansas City in the West. This weekend could be “Separation Sunday” in the AFC West as the Broncos must travel to Oakland to face the Raiders while the Chargers are in K.C. to meet the Chiefs. San Diego will be looking for revenge against the division rival that handed it its only home loss of the season, a 30-16 setback in late September.
Something has to give on Sunday as Kansas City has struggled at home this season (2-4) and the Bolts have struggled on the road (1-4). San Diego’s lone road win of the season was a key one however as they defeated AFC West rival Denver on Oct. 7. Kansas City has lost three straight at home, including last Sunday against the Raiders. If the Chargers are to defend their AFC West crown and win their third division title in the last four years, they will have to win on the road. Sunday’s game in Kansas City marks the first of two-consecutive road games and the Bolts will play three of their final five away from home. San Diego comes into Sunday’s game having won five of their last seven overall.
Sunday’s game against Kansas City is the Chargers’ first AFC West game in six weeks. Since 2004, the Chargers are 15-6 in AFC West games and 7-3 in road games. It’s safe to expect a close game on Sunday that comes down to the fourth quarter. Since the 2000 season, 10 of the 15 games between these two long-time rivals have been decided by eight points or less, including four of the seven games played at Arrowhead.
The Chargers have won five straight games in December and are 10-4 in Dec. the last three years.
QB Philip Rivers leads the Chargers. He passed for 309 yards and a touchdown two weeks ago in Jacksonville. Last Sunday against Baltimore, he put up 249 yards and three TDs with no interceptions vs. the NFL’s sixth ranked defense. He’ll be tested again Sunday by a K.C. defense that ranks 10th in the League. San Diego’s defense leads the NFL with 17 interceptions.
