The defending AFC West Champion San Diego Chargers play the first of three consecutive games against division rivals when they host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Sept. 30 at Qualcomm Stadium. Kickoff is at 1:15 p.m. PDT.
The Chargers have had very good success of late against Kansas City, winning three in a row at home and four of the last six overall in the series. While the Chargers will look to erase last week’s heartbreaking loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, Kansas City is looking to build off a 13-10 win last Sunday over Minnesota. It was the Chiefs’ first win of the season.
Aside from opening division play on Sunday, the Chargers will also begin a stretch in which they will spend four of the next five Sundays in San Diego, including the bye. It’s a good opportunity for the Bolts, who after opening at home against Chicago, had to travel to Boston for an NBC Sunday night game against the New England Patriots, and then turn around five days later and fly out to Wisconsin for last Sunday’s game against the Packers. The only trip the Bolts will take in the next five weeks is to Denver for a Week 5 match up at Invesco Field.
The Chargers have won two of the last three AFC West titles and are 13-5 in intra-division games over the last three seasons. The AFC West figures to be a fight to the finish as all four teams come into this weekend’s games separated by just one game. While the Chargers and Chiefs square off at Qualcomm Stadium, Denver has to travel to Indianapolis to take on the defending Super Bowl Champion Colts and Oakland must travel to Miami where they’re sure to be tested by the Dolphins.
On Sunday, the Chargers will look for their franchise-record tying 10th straight win at home. The Bolts haven’t lost a home game since Dec. 31, 2005 and a win over the Chiefs would equal the 10-straight home wins posted by the 1978-79 squads. The Chargers 11-point win over the Chiefs in San Diego last season (20-9) was a bit of an anomaly as the last nine games in the series played at Qualcomm Stadium have been decided by a total of 45 points. The Chargers are 7-2 in those games. Listen to the San Diego Chargers Live on KXO Radio AM1230. |
