The San Diego Chargers travel to the hallowed grounds of Lambeau Field this weekend for a rare regular-season matchup with the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Sept. 23. It figures to be one of the weekend’s more exciting games as the Chargers look to bounce back from last Sunday night’s loss to the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, while the Packers look to begin their season 3-0 for the first time since 2001.
San Diego is making its first regular-season trip to Green Bay since 1996. Last Sunday the Bolts dropped a tough game to the Patriots, evening their record at 1-1. Green Bay improved to 2-0 with an impressive win on the road over the New York Giants. CBS Sports will televise this week’s game to 25% of the country and they will send their top announcing team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms to Lambeau to call the game. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. PDT.
The Chargers have a short week to prepare. After playing a night game on Sunday in Foxboro, the team didn’t land in San Diego until after 4:30 am. The players have Monday and Tuesday off before practicing Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and heading to Wisconsin on Friday afternoon. The team will also hold a light practice in Green Bay on Saturday before facing the Packers on Sunday.
The Chargers and Packers have only met eight times in the regular season since 1970. San Diego only has one win in the series, but it did come in Lambeau Field as the 1984 squad beat the Packers, 34-28. Sunday’s battle could be a high-scoring affair as two of the NFL’s top gunslingers lead their respective teams into action. Philip Rivers is due for a breakout game, while his counterpart, Packers QB and future Hall of Famer Brett Favre is coming off a game in which he threw for 286 yards and three TDs against the Giants’ defense.
Also looking to get on track this weekend is running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who’s been held to just 68 rushing yards by the Bolts’ first two opponents. Last season, Tomlinson led the NFL in rushing and finished the year with 11 100-yard games. One Charger who did get on track last Sunday in New England was two-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, who had two sacks, a forced fumble and a tackle for loss against the Patriots.
