The San Diego Chargers have signed NFL veteran and former San Diego State wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim to a one-year contract. To make room on the roster for Hakim, the team placed fellow wide receiver Malcom Floyd on the “Reserve-Injured” list with an ankle injury. Hakim, 5-10, 189 pounds, is in his eighth NFL season. His career receiving totals include 316 catches for 4,191 yards and 28 touchdowns. He’s also rushed 30 times for 197 yards and a score; returned 165 punts for 1,773 yards and three scores; and returned 12 kickoffs for 208 yards. “Az provides the Chargers with valuable depth at receiver as well as punt and kickoff returner,” said General Manager A.J. Smith. “He also brings a wealth of experience in both regular season and postseason play.” Hakim was a fourth-round pick of the St. Louis Rams in 1998 with the 96th overall selection. He spent four seasons in St. Louis (1998-2001) where he played in two Super Bowls (XXXIV and XXXVI), winning a championship ring in 1999 when the Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans. Hakim has played in a total of seven postseason games, catching 21 passes for 284 yards and returning 11 punts for 149 yards. Hakim left St. Louis following the 2001 season and signed with Detroit (2002-04). He played three seasons in the Motor City before joining the New Orleans Saints in 2005. He re-signed with Detroit in 2006 and played in six games before he was released on Oct. 31. Hakim was born June 3, 1977 in Los Angeles. His full name Az-Zahir Ali Hakim stands for “the appearance of a high, wise counselor” in Muslim. He prepped at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles where he competed in football, basketball and track. Hakim was a four-year letterman at San Diego State. Floyd played in 12 games this season. He caught 15 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns.
