Chargers exclusive rights free agent wide receiver Greg Camarillo and offensive tackle Cory Lekkerkerker have both signed the one-year contract tenders they received from the team. Camarillo is entering his third year with the team. An undrafted free agent out of Stanford in 2005, he spent his rookie season on the practice squad and his second in 2006 on the active roster. Camarillo played in four games last season exclusively on special teams. “Greg and Cory have both worked very hard and shown steady improvement throughout their time here,” General Manager A.J. Smith said. “They’ve given us some good depth. I’m looking forward to watching both of them continue to develop.” The 25-year-old Lekkerkerker saw action in 15 games last season, mostly on special teams and as an extra tight end in jumbo packages near the goal line. In Week 6 at San Francisco, he was called to action when right tackle Shane Olivea went down with a knee injury late in the second quarter. Lekkerkerker filled in admirably as quarterback Philip Rivers was not sacked and LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for two touchdowns with the second-year tackle in the lineup. Lekkerkerker also saw time at left tackle in the Chargers’ Week 2 win over Tennessee. He was on the field for a three-play, 88-yard drive that saw Michael Turner break a 73-yard run before quarterback Charlie Whitehurst scored on a 14-yard carry. The 6-7, 323-pounder joined the Chargers in 2005 as an undrafted rookie free agent out of California-Davis. He spent eight weeks on the club’s practice squad before being added to the 53-man roster in Week 9. |
