Some of the world’s top vintage racing machines return to Naval Air Station North Island the weekend of October 6-7 for the 10th Annual Coronado Speed Festival. The runways and taxiways of the Air Station, known as the birthplace of naval aviation, transform into the stage for almost 300 vintage racecars competing wheel-to-wheel on a spectator-friendly 1.6-mile course. Festivities take place from 8 am to 5 pm each day.

Courtesy of the Escondido Auto Park and the Navy’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program, all active duty military personnel and their immediate dependents (military ID holders) will receive free entry into the Coronado Speed Festival. Active duty military, active reservists and dependent ID holders DO NOT need tickets and will gain admission through a specially-designated entry gate. Admission is free for children 12 and younger.

Retirees, DOD employees, and other Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) authorized patrons can purchase tickets at half price through the Navy Region Southwest MWR Ticket Offices. Tickets are $12.50 for one day and $15 for a weekend pass. Tickets may also be purchased at MWR’s Recreational Ticket Vehicle on site either day.

The Coronado Speed Festival, one of the nation’s most unique races, features vintage racecars chosen to compete on the basis of their historical significance and certified authenticity. Eight different race groups with various pedigrees date from 1913 to 1974. Static displays of current and vintage Navy aircraft will compliment these classic racing machines, some of which are valued in the millions of dollars.

In addition to the racing action, this two-day spectacle features many opportunities for racing fans and car aficionados to get up close and personal with some very prestigious automobiles. Unlike most racing events, fans are invited to tour the pits to learn about these special machines. Garage tours provide a unique chance for fans to explore the garage area, view the cars and talk with the drivers. As part of their general admission, casual fans to true gearheads can walk around the racecar garage on their own or take a garage tour led by the drivers themselves.

The Classic Car Collection will feature many of automotive history’s most striking vehicles that combine speed with sophistication. Vendor Village offers the latest innovative products, high-tech exhibits, racing paraphernalia, games, automotive products and official event merchandise. Furthermore, the Car Club Corral will showcase more than 66 car clubs and 1,800 cars for everyone’s viewing pleasure.

The Coronado Speed Festival is produced by San Diego Fleet Week Foundation and hosted by the Naval Base Coronado and the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program (MWR) which benefits military personnel and their families.  They in turn provide positive support for the active duty military community and their families through Quality of Life Programs including single Sailor Recreation Centers, Fitness and Aquatic Facilities and the Base Theatre Free Movies.  The Southern California community is given this unbelievable opportunity to thank the men and women defending our freedom in person.
