(Boxer, Vargas and Ruiz petition Secretary of Interior)…The letter is in support of an IID plan.
US Senator Barbara Boxer, and US Representatives Juan Vargas and Raul Ruiz sent the letter to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, asking her to designate the lands at the Salton Sea as a renewable energy development focus area. The letter says the concept is an example of the creative, locally driven solutions needed to address the complex problems facing the Salton Sea. The letter follows a congressional briefing that brought together a panel of local, state and federal representatives to discuss the future of the Salton Sea. During the briefing Imperial Irrigation District General Manager Kevin Kelley presented a proposal to use renewable energy development at the Salton Sea to fund environmental mitigation and restoration work. Before the briefing a Memorandum of Understanding was signed be the department of Interior and the Salton Sea Authority. The letter sent to Jewell went on to say the designation requested would fall in line with the Administration’s commitments to develop clean energy, and further give clarity to the Salton Sea’s future.
